Marketplace Fraud Alert

At MCM, we take our commitment to our consumers very seriously.  Because of this, we feel it is important to make our consumers aware of a series of scams that appear to be targeting the credit/collection industries. In these scams, individuals and companies posing as debt collectors contact consumers in a harassing, threatening and/or misleading manner regarding accounts that are owed to other creditors, or have already been paid off entirely. These individuals may use a variety of aggressive scare tactics, including saying that someone is on their way to the consumer’s home or workplace to serve legal papers, or threatening that the consumer will be jailed unless the alleged debt is paid immediately.

If you are contacted by anyone that threatens you with tactics like those described above and claims to represent MCM, or states that they are collecting on an account you have with MCM, please report the conduct to us immediately at 1-800-265-8825, ext. 20307.   DO NOT:

  • follow the instructions of individual or company
  • provide any financial, account or payment information
  • provide any personal information

MCM will NEVER interact with our consumers in the manner described above.  In everything we do, MCM is committed to adhering to all applicable federal and state debt-collection laws and regulations and our own industry-leading Consumer Bill of Rights.  Additionally, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) sets guidelines on how debt collectors like MCM are allowed to do business, and also guarantees the rights of consumers.  Although the list of activities prohibited by the FDCPA is not limited to those discussed in this alert, under the FDCPA debt collectors MAY NOT:

  • threaten arrest, jail or physical harm
  • threaten to freeze your assets without due process
  • threaten actions against a family member
  • continue to call if they know you are represented by an attorney
